What to expect from a paddle session
Below are a series of Q&A’s to hopefully reassure those of you who are new to paddle. All activities are supported by instructors throughout and we’d love to introduce lots of beginners to the fun of SUP!
What should I wear?
You are likely to get wet as you will spend some time kneeling on the board and sitting on your heels. Gym clothing is ideal. We would advise that you have a change of clothes and a towel to dry off. All participants will be required to wear a buoyancy aid which will be provided. You must wear shoes when paddling in Paddington. An old pair of thin-soled trainers that you don’t mind getting wet are fine. If you have grippy shoes designed for watersports, even better.
Where can I get changed?
Paddleboarding London don’t have changing rooms, so if you can, arrive ready to go.
Where can I leave belongings during the session?
There is lockable storage available for small personal possessions e.g. a small rucksack or handbag. The storage will be locked during your session but Paddleboarding London and Grand Union BID cannot take any responsibility for loss or damage to items. You can take your phone on the water but only in a small waterproof case, and again we cannot be responsible for any damage. We would really encourage you to leave your phone behind and switch off for the session. Paddleboarding London will take photos and video (with your consent) that can be shared with you afterwards.
How hard is it?
Paddle boarding is a brilliant body workout and you will get a short skills lesson before you start. Don’t worry if you don’t feel comfortable standing up – kneeling works well for steering the boards and for picking up plastic. The exercise is not strenuous, but it will challenge your balance. It should be noted that you may spend a lot of time on your knees.
How likely am I to fall in?
Not very, but it does happen. Paddleboarding London will be with you throughout and will teach you techniques to help you stay more stable. If you stay on your knees you are very safe. There are toilets and hand basins nearby to wash your hands and hand sanitizer will be available for all. If you do fall in and are able to shower in your office we would encourage you to do so. If not, please shower as soon as you get home.
Is the water clean?
Plastic pollution in the canal is a problem – that is why we are running pick and paddle sessions. However, the canals are generally bacteriologically safe. As a precaution, open cuts should be covered with plasters and tape and you should wash your hands after the session.
We look forward to you joining us on the water for a summer of SUP!
